The Finest Natural Ingredients - Cacao and ceremonial cacao

Welcome to my site! If this is your first time here, I’m thrilled you’ve found your way to this space dedicated to wellness. Here, I share insights from my experiences as a Skin and Wellness therapist, along with product and spa reviews.

Today, I’m excited to talk about cacao, specifically ceremonial cacao. Have you heard of it? I hadn’t until I attended my first meditation and sound healing session with ceremonial cacao in Cornwall (shout out to Emma at Embodhi Wellbeing). That was my introduction to ceremonial cacao, and let me tell you—it’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression!

Let’s clarify what makes ceremonial cacao different. The main distinction between regular cacao and ceremonial grade cacao lies in how it’s processed and prepared. For ceremonial cacao, the process is kept as minimal and pure as possible. The bean used is typically a whole, native cacao strain, with nothing added or removed. This ensures that the cacao remains in its purest form, which is crucial since ceremonial cacao is meant to connect you to its spiritual essence.

The ceremonial aspect comes from the intentional and mindful way the cacao is prepared and consumed. Every step—from selecting the bean to brewing, pouring, and finally drinking—is done with mindfulness, almost like a meditation in itself. However, if the spiritual side isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy raw cacao in its natural form without the ceremonial context.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of ceremonial cacao and why it’s considered such a powerful and transformative experience!

" I open to connect with the Spirit"

What is Ceremonial Grade Cacao?

Ceremonial grade cacao is a highly revered form of cacao that is used in traditional spiritual and healing ceremonies. It comes from native strains of cacao beans, often wild-harvested in regions like Central and South America, particularly in countries like Guatemala, Peru, and Ecuador. The process of creating ceremonial cacao is meticulous, with an emphasis on preserving the natural integrity of the cacao bean.

This is all been said earlier in my blog but I just wanted to make extra sure you understand why its different to coco powder or the cacao mixes you can get at the supermartket. They produce beans that are sun-dried, lightly fermented, and treated with the utmost respect—no funny business with added sugars or funky processing. The result? A cacao that’s as pure as it gets, perfect for those spiritual ceremonies or just a mindful moment with your morning brew.

Drinking ceremonial cacao is like sipping on a cup of rich, velvety chocolate with a touch of earthiness that makes you feel connected to the roots of the cacao tree itself. It’s not as sweet as hot chocolate; instead, it has a deep, slightly bitter flavour with subtle hints of nuttiness and fruitiness. The texture is thick and creamy, almost like drinking a warm hug. Because it’s minimally processed, you might notice a bit of natural grit, which only adds to the authentic experience. It's defiantly more that a drink, it feels indulgent and naughty, however its nothing but good for your health. It'll curb any night time cravings for sweet things or chocolate and you'll feel so good after you drink it.

What are the benefits?

Incorporating cacao into your daily or weekly routine can have numerous positive effects on the body. Unlike typical “Dairy Milk” chocolate, cacao is rich in minerals and packed with antioxidants, offering a healthier alternative that promotes lasting, beneficial habits.

When it comes to ceremonial-grade cacao, the benefits extend beyond the physical to include mental, emotional, and even spiritual well-being. Cacao has been shown to reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of depression, thanks to its high content of antioxidants and its influence on key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and anandamide. These neurotransmitters contribute to an overall sense of well-being. Additionally, cacao contains phenylethylamine, a naturally occurring compound known to boost mood and happiness. Regular consumption of pure cacao can lead to significant improvements in your overall mental state.

One of the primary physical benefits of drinking cacao is attributed to theobromine, a mild stimulant that enhances alertness and wakefulness. However, if you’re sensitive to stimulants, it’s best to avoid consuming cacao at night.

Cacao also promotes cardiovascular health by increasing blood flow, thanks to the presence of flavonoids. Also, polyphenols in cacao can help lower blood pressure, contributing to overall heart health.

One of my favorite aspects of cacao is its high magnesium content, a mineral that acts as a muscle relaxant and helps calm the nervous system. For optimal health, women around the age of 30 are recommended to consume 310-320 mg of magnesium daily, though this amount varies based on factors like gender, age, and pregnancy. Remarkably, raw organic or ceremonial cacao is one of the richest plant-based sources of magnesium, a mineral often deficient in Western diets. Just one cup of this nutrient-rich drink can provide about 50% of your daily magnesium needs, helping with period pain, reducing inflammation, and aiding digestion.

So, if you’re experiencing migraines, bloating, menstrual cramps, fatigue, or simply feeling down, a cup of this wonderful, mood-boosting drink can be incredibly beneficial.

Beyond its physical and mental health advantages, ceremonial-grade cacao also serves as a powerful tool for spiritual growth and connection. Traditionally used in indigenous ceremonies, cacao is believed to facilitate a deep connection with the spirit world, promoting mindfulness and relaxation.

Step by step -

This will vary depending which product you buy...

  1. I like to play some Ritual or meditation music as I set my intentions you can do this out loud or in your mind. Light some candles and begin to prepare

  2. Measure out your Ceremonial grade Cacao (Between 20-40grams)

  3. Measure out 250 ml's of almond milk (milk of choice) ** see almond milk recipe below

  4. Bring your milk to a simmer

  5. Place the Cacao in your pan and mix

  6. When the Cacao starts to melt, mix and break it down, turn down the heat and let it all melt

  7. It'll usually take up to 20 - 30 mins for the perfect consistency. In the meantime do you rhythmic movements, connect your bodies to the earth and lead with intuition.

  8. Pout it in to your desired cup and enjoy, slowly, intentionally, being mindful with every stip.

A cacao drink can be enjoyed in the morning or the evening or any time of day you prefer. Personally I like it at night, it calms me before bed. Some people feel energised from ceremonial cacao, so listen to your body if its going to keep you awake try it in the morning or early afternoon.
